En Shahman Presents Certificate Of Appreciation To Volunteers

Soroptimist International Club of Damansara (SID) today held a virtual graduation ceremony for the children of Rumah Aman who attended the Building Bridges Beyond Borders’s (BBBB) online pilot programme, titled “BBBB On Line Fun With English”.  Yayasan Azman Hashim (YAH), a sponsor of the BBBB programme, was invited to attend the ceremony.  YAH had donated RM105,000 towards the BBBB programme over 3 years.

En Shahman Azman, Amcorp Group Berhad Director, was the guest of honour representing YAH at the graduation ceremony.  He presented certificate of appreciation to the undergraduate volunteers from University Of Bath, United Kingdom, namely Charlotte Greenlees, Madalena Chantre and Katya Klymenko.  They had recently completed the 3-month BBBB online tutoring program for the children in Rumah Aman.

The BBBB programme entails the enlistment of undergraduate volunteers from local and overseas universities to undergo a 3-month teaching stint in non-profit organizations such as Rumah Aman, Myanmar Refugees Community Learning Centre and Sekolah Tunas Bakti.  Throughout the years, BBBB had over 80 volunteers from 16 countries, across four continents.

Effective 2019, University of Bath awarded credits to its undergraduates for their volunteering under the BBBB programme. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, overseas volunteers were unable to come to Malaysia because of travel restrictions.  Instead, the volunteers now conduct their classes online.

Thus, the “BBBB On Line Fun With English” programme was born.  Due to time difference between Malaysia and United Kingdom, classes and mentoring groups are mainly held in the evenings in Malaysia.  Rumah Aman was selected as the pilot for this new format because the children in Rumah Aman are full time residents with a qualified full-time education coordinator.  Moreover, the orphanage is equipped with a computer lab.

The Graduation Ceremony to mark the children’ completion of the programme was truly an international event attended by the volunteers and their family members, Rumah Aman staff members and children, members of SID, and Ms Josephine Chesterton, Programme Director for BBBB, who logged in from Portugal, United Kingdom, Hong Kong and various parts of Malaysia.

SID is part of the global women’s organization, Soroptimist International, which is an international volunteer movement established in 1921 in the United States of America, with the objective to educate, empower and enable opportunities for women and girls across 121 member countries.

YAH is a non-profit charitable organization founded by philanthropist entrepreneur Tan Sri Azman Hashim in 1991 with an ultimate goal to give back to the society and alleviate human suffering. Its core activities focus on improving education to transform lives.
