Yayasan Azman Hashim sponsors RM200K towards Malaysia Inner Temple Alumni Association’s 60th Merdeka anniversary celebration 

(Kuala Lumpur, 25 Aug 2017) – Tan Sri Azman Hashim, via Yayasan Azman Hashim, sponsored RM200,000 towards Malaysia Inner Temple Alumni Association (“MITAA”)’s celebration of the 60th anniversary of Merdeka. The RM200,000 was used for the production of a documentary entitled “Of Wig and Robe” and a portrait of Duli Yang Maha Mulia Almarhum Tuanku Abdul Rahman ibni Almarhum Tuanku Muhammad, the first King of Malaysia.

The Honourable Society of the Inner Temple is one of the four Inns of Court (professional association for barristers and judges) in London. The Inn is a professional body that provides legal training, selection and regulations for members. In order to be called to Bar and practise as a barrister in England and Wales, an individual must belong to one of these Inns. MITAA is the Malaysian Alumni Association of the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple, United Kingdom.

MITAA, a non-profit organization, was formed in 2006. The late DYMM Almarhum Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Malaysia’s first King along with Malaysia’s first Prime Minister, the late Tunku Abdul Rahman were also barristers and members of the MITAA. 

The documentary “Of Wig and Robe” was produced under the auspices of the Istana Besar Seri Menanti, Negeri Sembilan and Inner Temple, London. It featured the role of DYMM Almarhum Tuanku Abdul Rahman as the first King of the independent Federation of Malaya and offered insight on how studying law at Inner Temple had helped prepare him for this important role as the first ruler of a newly independent nation. A sneak peak of the documentary was shown at the MITAA Annual Dinner in August 2017 and MITAA intends to broadcast the documentary at both the domestic and international levels.

The portrait of the late DYMM Almarhum Tuanku Abdul Rahman, was also unveiled at the Annual Dinner by DYMM Tuanku Muhriz ibni Almarhum Tuanku Munawir, the Yang Di Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan. The portrait will be hung in the halls of Inner Temple, London alongside well known leaders of other nations and men, women of historical importance. 

The painting of the portrait was by renowned Malaysian artist, Zakii Anwar. 

Other activities organized by MITAA to pay homage to the special occasion included a series of high level lectures and an essay competition for law students.

Amongst the dignitaries who graced the Dinner included royalty, Yang Amat Mulia Tunku Ali Redhauddin ibni Tuanku Muhriz, the Tunku Besar of Seri Menanti, Negeri Sembilan as Royal Patron, MITAA’s Master Treasurer, Mr David Pittaway QC and Sub-Treasurer Mr Patrick Maddams of Inner Temple, United Kingdom.
